16th - 19th November 1997

Sunday 16th November
Today we stayed in bed.  We began our samplers yesterday and so we carried on with them and read and slept!  We eventually got up at sunset, 4pm, and went down to the ATM which we had found eventually.  We ate our burritos for dinner and then the garage man said we could sleep in the van in the garage which was a bonus.  We went to the cinema and it was quite good really, all about China and its law.  We did some more sewing and went to bed.

Monday 17th November
After one of the best night's sleep I've had in the van, as it was so warm, we got up quite early because we thought they would start work on the van quite early.  They didn't actually start until 11 'o' clock.  The wheel bearings were actually fine it was a spring that was broken that meant out brakes were on all the time.  The part cost $2.50, grease $5.50 and labour $40!
But it needed to be done and we were out of there by lunchtime.
We drove to Duluth and stayed the night in a McDonalds car-park.  We did actually get out in Duluth which seemed to be quite a nice place, full of Christmas lights and nice buildings.

Tuesday 18th November
Somehow managed to turn the alarm off without hearing it!  Got up, washed and dressed and washed dishes in McDonalds and were on our way again.  Today we spent just driving through Wisconsin.  The most surprising thing we was was lots of orange as deer-hunting season had just started.  We drove along Lake Superior for most of the way and then into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Finding somewhere to stop for the night was quite stressful as it was real countryside and no lay-bys. We finally found a place on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Wednesday 19th November
Drove across the toll bridge at St Ignace into mainland Michigan.  Now we were on major roads and therefore making better time.  We stopped at the "World's Largest Crucifix" and the "World's Largest Christmas Store", kind of one in the same thing! :-)
Made it back into Canada!
It felt like we were coming home but we are still miles away from everyone.  We stopped for the night just inside the border in some restaurant car-park.  I forgot to say, we bought Xmax hats at the Xmas store so now we look even more stupid waving at truck drivers!
Claire called Dave as he's in Waterloo but he wasn't in so we left a message.
