19th - 21st October 1997

Sunday 19th October
We left Whistler today taking 3 rides to get out of town and then we hit a stroke of luck.  This guy picked us up in Pemberton and said he was driving to Kelowna, exactly where we wanted to go.  He let us drive and has even offered us somewhere to stay.  He wants us to babysit Tuesday and Wednesday night but we're not sure about jobs in Nelson.  We're going to call a few resorts tomorrow.

Monday 20th October
Paul's alarm went off at 6am and we weren't sure if we should get up straight away or wait for him.  So I got up and out some tea and coffee on and then Paul and the kids got up a bit later.  The children are quite sweet, Kayla and Calvin, and we took them to school and then went into town.  We found a mall and some bargainous cookies and then called 2 resorts.  Once in Nelson and one in Rosalind, they want us to take our resumes in at the end of the week and then they'll be interviewing.  the jobs don't start until mid-November so we'll probably only have 1 month there before we go to Nevada for Christmas.  The latest plan Claire and I have come up with is to go to Nelson 'til Christmas then to Nevada with Bruce, then after Christmas to Santa Barbara with Marsham then hitch to Whistler from California.  Stay in Whistler for high season then to Tofino via Powell River in March/April.  I wonder if it'll happen?  It looks like we'll be staying here until Thursday morning, we're babysitting tomorrow and Wednesday night and getting $50.
We actually babysat for most of the afternoon and they were really playing up.  We'd had enough so we hatched a plan.  We said that a ski-hill that we called said we had to be there asap so we could leave tomorrow.  I called Aaron while Claire managed to not kill the kids and when Paul came home (2 hours later) we went out in the boat with them.  It was really quiet and peaceful but absolutely freezing cold!  When we got back Paul had made his famous left-over stew which was delicious and it really made us feel like part of the family, we even felt guilty for lying. We've now had showers and are packed ready to go, just need to get a good night's sleep.

Tuesday 21st October
Awoke again at 6am and we were finally out of here.  Paul drive us to past Kelowna after he'd dropped his kids off at school.  He gave us photos of the kids and at dinner yesterday he thanked "the Lord" for us coming in and cheering up their lives!  We felt a bit guilty about lying to him but it was time to move on.  Rutland is where we were dropped which is on the outskirts of Kelowna.  We were waiting at a shell station for about half an hour and then we had a lift just to the edge of town.  While we were at the shell station we met a Spanish guy who was also hitching to Nelson and we saw him again at the edge of town.  We waited there for another 40 odd minutes, then we got a ride.  They were from Beaverdale and were in Kelowna for the dentist so they gave us a ride to their home, introduced us to the cafe owner and offered us a place to stay if we didn't get picked up.  We got moved on from the corner store to hitch-hike and we were there about 5 minutes with "Leaf" showed up.  He live in Rossland so we decided we'd stay there.  He was driving from Smithers, north BC, to Rosalind so he was glad of the company.  Unfortunately we weren't the best company as both of us fell asleep pretty quickly.  We reached Rossland at about 5pm and checked into the hostel.  We had a walk around the town and then got cheap bargainous food, came back, ate and vegged in front of the tv.  We had a really early night as we were both so knackered.
